ALESIS SERIAL PORT DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 95/98

The Alesis Serial Port Driver for Windows 95/98 (ASDWIN98)
is used to send and receive midi data to and from your Alesis
Synthesizer via the QS Serial Port.  At the time of this
writing, Alesis Synthesizers equipped with the QS Serial Port
are: NanoSynth, QS6, QS6.1, QS7, QS8, or QSR 
Refer to your owner's manual for more info on the serial port.

NOTE: IF HAVE AN OLDER VERSION OF ASDWIN (Prior to ver 3.00)
BE SURE TO REMOVE THE OLDER VERSION BEFORE INSTALLING THIS
VERSION.  If you have an older version of 3.00 or higher, 
you may simply "Update the Driver".

(1) INSTALLING THE ALESIS SERIAL PORT WINDOWS MIDI DRIVER

NOTE: IF HAVE AN OLDER VERSION OF ASDWIN (Prior to ver 3.00)
BE SURE TO REMOVE THE OLDER VERSION BEFORE INSTALLING THIS
VERSION.  If you have an older version of 3.00 or higher, 
you may simply "Update the Driver".


SETUP FOR WINDOWS 95
=====================
-Go to the Settings item in the Start Menu.
-Select the "Control Panel" item
-Select "Add New Hardware"
-Select "NO" (do NOT have windows auto-detect hardware)
-Select "Sound, Video, Game contollers" as hardware type. 
-When prompted for device, select "Have Disk"
-Navigate to the ASDWIN.INF file in the ASDWIN directory
-Follow the Win95 instructions.
-When the Alesis Serial driver settings dialog appears,
 select the COM port that the QS synth is attached to.


SETUP FOR WINDOWS 98
=====================
-Go to the Settings item in the Start Menu.
-Select the "Control Panel" item
-Select "Add New Hardware", this will start the New Hardware Wizard
-Select "Next".
-Select "Next" again, Windows wants to search for Plug and Play
 Hardware first.
-If the Hardware Wizard finds something, it will display a list,
 if so, just select "No, the device isn't in the list"
-Select "Next".
-Select "NO" (do NOT have windows try to auto-detect hardware)
-Select "Next".
-Select "Sound, Video, Game contollers" as hardware type. 
-Select "Next".
-When prompted for device, select "Have Disk"
-Navigate to the ASDWIN.INF file in the ASDWIN directory
-Follow the Win98 instructions.
-When the Alesis Serial driver settings dialog appears,
 select the COM port that the QS synth is attached to.

(1b) UPDATING THE DRIVER
*********************************************************

-Go to the Settings item in the Start Menu.
-Select the "Control Panel" item
-Select "System" to open the system applet
-Select the "Device Manager" tab
-Under "Sound, Video, Game contollers" select
 the "Alesis Serial Midi Interface Driver"
-Select the "Properties" button
-Select the "Driver" tab
-Click the "Update Driver" button
-The Update Device Driver Wizard appears
 click "Next"
-Choose to Display a List of all Drivers
 click "Next"
-The Alesis Serial MIDI Driver should be showing, if
 not you need to install it (see above section)
-Click the "Have Disk" button
-Browse to the location where the new ASDWIN driver
 files are located (finding ASDWIN.INF), Select OK.
-Click OK to accept this location
-The Alesis Serial MIDI Driver is now listed in the
 Select Device Window.  Select OK.
-Depending upon the version you are updating from, you
 may receive warning messages about the version and/or
 compatibility of the driver.  Just select PROCEED or
 OK or YES at these warnings if you get them.
-The driver is now shown in the Update Device Wizard
 select "Next".
-Select Finish.

(2) CHANGING THE DRIVER PARAMETERS AFTER INSTALLATION

LOCATING THE DRIVER IN WINDOWS 95 / 98

-Go to the Settings item in the Start Menu.
-Select the "Control Panel" item
-Select "System" to open the system applet
-Select the "Device Manager" tab
-Under "Sound, Video, Game contollers" select
 the "Alesis Serial Midi Interface Driver"
-Select the "Properties" button
-Select the "Settings" tab

-Go to the Settings item in the Start Menu.
-Select the "Control Panel" item
-Select "Multimedia" to open the multimedia applet
-For Windows 95 select the "Advanced" tab,
 for Windows 98 select the "Devices" tab
-Under "Midi Devices and Instruments" select
 the "Alesis Serial Midi Interface Driver"
-Select the "Properties" button
-Select the "Settings..." button

-now the Alesis Serial MIDI Driver Setup window is open
-for a description of the parameters, refer to the next
 section of this document.
